2017 Berlin ePrix – Venturi Newsletter race report – Saturday

The Saturday race in the German capital is held in front of packed grandstands and in brilliant summer weather.

By finishing 9th Maro Engel secures another two championship points.

Tom Dillmann receives drive-through penalty and finishes 17th in the first of the two races in Berlin.

In the week prior to the German FIA Formula E Championship race meeting Venturi, the only Monegasque squad in the series, announced a driver swap. Stephane Sarrazin, a Venturi regular since the series was founded in 2014, will contest the rest of the season for the Chinese squad Techeetah. Venturi replaced him by Frenchman Tom Dillmann who already successfully contested the race in France for them.

Berlin is the venue of the first doubleheader on the 2017 Formula E calendar. As the race meetings in New York and Montreal also will be doubleheaders, Berlin represents the season half-time for the innovative e-race series.

In the race, the high expectations of the team unfortunately weren’t met. After the good results recently secured in Mexico, Monaco and Paris, only one of the Venturi drivers – Maro Engel – made it to the top 10. Meanwhile, Tom Dillmann received a drive-through penalty as the maximum power used by him was too high (174 instead of 170kW).

“It goes without saying that this was a major setback,” said Tom.  “And as the circuit here in Berlin is extremely spectacular but doesn’t offer a lot of overtaking opportunities, my race was difficult after the penalty”

Maro Engel took a similar point of view after his first race in front of his compatriots: “I can be happy with having finished 9th. After a good early stage of the race, I held eight position but then I got a little problem with the energy consumption. Therefore, Prost and Buemi could pass me. I had to fight hard throughout the race and therefore, having scored this point is really okay.” Sebastien Buemi, the championship leader was disqualified after the race.

Tomorrow, the motor-racing enthusiast will witness the same schedule as today. And for Maro Engel and Tom Dillmann it will be the second chance of scoring points in Berlin.
