2017 Berlin ePrix – Venturi Newsletter race report – Sunday

Maro Engel early out of the race due to collision with Loïc Duval

Engel scores a championship point by setting the fastest race lap

25,000 enthusiastic spectators over the weekend make for a fantastic atmosphere at Berlin’s airport Tempelhof.

After the ninth place Maro Engel secured for Venturi yesterday, in the first of the two rounds of the only FIA Formula E race meeting on German soil, the Venturi regular’s  hopes for securing a better result on Sunday came to an early and sudden end on lap one. “I had an unfortunate close encounter with Loïc Duval,” the German residing in Monaco said after the race. “He just left me no room while I wanted to pass him on the inside in turn six.” In the collision, parts of Engel’s front suspension were bent and he soon had to pit.

Afterwards, however, Engel could demonstrate his competitiveness at the wheel of his second Formula E racer by setting the fastest race lap.”In Formula E, the fastest race lap is rewarded with an additional point – the same reward as if you finish tenth. This means that we made the best of it.” In addition, Engel also secured the ‘VISA fastest Lap’ Trophy for his Monegasque team.

Tom Dillmann also encountered a difficult Sunday. Having secured 15th  position on the grid he also finished 15th in the race. “After my good debut in Paris with an eight`s position, that`s a pity of course. But I struggled with my energy consumption throughout the race. And although it looks as if I had a quit race I was involved in several really tough battles.”

Now, after a breather, Venturi and the entire Formula E fraternity will travel to New York. On 15th / 16th July, the Big Apple will be the venue of the next double header and two weeks later, Canada’s second biggest metropolis, Montreal, will stage the third consecutive double-header of the season and the season finale at the same time.
