MEXICO E-PRIX: VENTURI PICKS UP PRECIOUS POINTS
3 March 2018, Mexico City
The VENTURI Formula E team leaves Mexico City with 4 more points on the board after a positive weekend that might have been even better.
MIXED FORTUNES IN PRACTICE
Free practice is all about race preparation, and the team focused on optimising energy consumption. However, Edoardo MORTARA’s second place in the first practice session was a clear indication of the car’s capabilities.
The draw for qualifying put Maro ENGEL in group one, where the German driver finished second, while Edoardo MORTARA was drawn in the fourth qualifying group. After three of his rivals picked up penalties, Maro ENGEL found himself starting from 11th place on the grid, with Edoardo MORTARA 18th.
SUPERB COMEBACK DRIVES
Although Maro ENGEL had a problem at the start that saw him drop to the back of the pack, Edoardo MORTARA moved up two places inside the opening two laps. With a third of the race gone, MORTARA was up to 15th, ahead of Lucas DI GRASSI (AUDI ABT) and Maro ENGEL. Thereafter, the two VENTURI Formula E team drivers raced wheel to wheel in 15th and 16th place.
At the halfway stage, the car swap was handled to perfection, the drivers re-joining the circuit in 11th (MORTARA) and 12th (ENGEL) and maintaining an excellent pace. With five laps to go, the VENTURI Formula E team pair were in 9th and 10th place, MORTARA ahead of ENGEL. At that point, the Monegasque team was hopeful of both cars finishing in the points, but just two laps from the chequered flag, Maro ENGEL saw those hopes dashed.
“Lucas Di Grassi hit me several times and sent me into the wall. It’s a pity as I’d had a good drive up the field. I was looking at 8th or 9th place, but ended up 16th. Hopefully in the future we will be able to show our potential”, Maro ENGEL, VENTURI Formula E team driver.
Meanwhile, Edoardo MORTARA – who had started 18th on the grid – went on to cross the finishing line in 8th place.
“The car was handling well in free practice. Qualifying was more complicated. We knew the race pace would probably be good. It was. But to fulfil our full potential, we would have needed to start up front”, Edoardo MORTARA, VENTURI Formula E team driver.
“Maro and Edoardo fought very well. We deserved better than this result, but… that’s racing. This Mexican stage will encourage us on the path to improvement in this very competitive championship”, Gildo PASTOR, President of the VENTURI Formula E team.
THE BEST YET TO COME
The VENTURI Formula E team is now 7th in the overall team standings, while in the drivers’ championship, Edoardo MORTARA is now 8th and Maro ENGEL 16th.
The next race will be in Punta del Este (Uruguay), on Saturday 17 March.
