PARIS E-PRIX: MARO ENGEL ADDS TO VENTURI’S POINTS HAUL
Paris, 28 April 2018
The VENTURI Formula E team picked up 12 more points thanks to a fine fourth place for Maro ENGEL in Paris, while Edoardo MORTARA was denied a points finish by a collision.
MIXED FORTUNES IN QUALIFYING
After suffering bad luck at the previous five race meetings, Maro ENGEL’s fortunes finally changed for the better in Paris, where he was drawn in qualifying group 4, the most advantageous. His teammate Edoardo MORTARA ended up in group 3.
Edoardo struggled with his brakes and qualified in 18th place overall. Maro ENGEL first of all finished 4th in his group to go through to the super pole, where he repeated the feat to ensure he would start from 4th on the grid.
RACE FOR THE POINTS
When the lights went out, Edoardo MORTARA got away well and immediately moved up two places. Maro ENGEL also had a good start and was able to hold his position in 4th. During the first half of the race, Lucas DI GRASSI (AUDI ABT) put Maro ENGEL under constant pressure, but the German driver held firm, and it was only the car swap that saw the reigning champion edge past ENGEL into 4th. Meanwhile, Edoardo MORTARA gradually worked his way up the field and was in 15th when he switched to his second car.
In the second half of the race, as Maro ENGEL fought to hold off Sébastien BUEMI in the battle for 5th, Edoardo MORTARA continued to gain places. With nine laps to go he found himself 12th, with hopes of making it into the top ten and collecting valuable points in the championship race. At that point, however, there was contact between Edoardo and José-Maria LOPEZ (DRAGON RACING), a racing incident that saw the VENTURI driver drop back to 13th, where he would stay until the end. Maro ENGEL, running in 5th place at that point, had a perfect view as Sam BIRD (DS Virgin) and André LOTTERER (Techeetah) had a coming together in the dying seconds of the race, taking advantage to snatch a fine 4th place finish.
WHAT THEY SAID
“Coming out of turn n°9, José-Maria LOPEZ suddenly slowed down. To defend his position, he changed his racing line four or five times but wasn’t penalised for it. We were side by side going into turn n°10. I gave him room to avoid contact but he touched me and sent me into the wall. It’s a shame because I could have finished in the points again today”, Edoardo MORTARA, VENTURI Formula E team driver.
“I’m very happy with the day, even if we were just three-tenths off the podium. It’s a pity, but most importantly it was a great success by the whole team. It’s good to get this result ahead of my home e-prix in Berlin on 19 May,” Maro ENGEL, VENTURI Formula E team driver.
BERLIN: CHANGES ON THE HORIZON
Edoardo MORTARA will be unable to compete in the next race due to his involvement in the DTM series. To replace him, the VENTURI Formula E Team has once again chosen to put its faith in Tom Dillmann, who drove for the Monegasque team for a part of last season.
“I’m delighted to be able to count on Tom once again. He has an amazing capacity to adapt and is also excellent at fine-tuning. I’m convinced he’ll be up to the task”, Gildo PASTOR, President of VENTURI Formula E team.
The next race will be in Berlin on 19 May, for the ninth stage of the championship.
