SANYA E-PRIX: VENTURI FORMULA E TEAM SEEKS FURTHER SUCCESS IN THE FAR EAST AS FORMULA E DEBUTS IN SANYA
Following Edoardo MORTARA’s victory at the last race in Hong Kong (March 10th), VENTURI Formula E Team heads into the sixth leg of the 2018–2019 Formula E championship in Sanya (China), keen to capitalise on the momentum of recent strong performances.
ON THE ASCENT
With the team now in fourth position in the championship standings having earned 66 points over the last three races, Edoardo MORTARA arrives in China in third place in the championship, tied with former champion, Lucas DI GRASSI, and just two points behind the leader, Sam BIRD. Having notched up 14 crucial championship points over the past two races, VENTURI team mate and former F1 Vice World Champion, Felipe MASSA, is also looking forward to adding more points to his scoresheet this weekend.
Following recent form, the two VENTURI Formula E Team drivers know that their car has the potential to compete at the front of the pack. The engineering team were fully satisfied with the working sessions in the simulator ahead of the Chinese race, so it’s all systems go as the team departs from their headquarters in Monaco.
The 2.236-kilometre track in Sanya follows the South China Sea coastline on the island of Hainan at the southernmost tip of China. The city is best known as a holiday destination and the local race promoters have pulled out all the stops in preparation for Formula E championship debut event.
As a new addition to the calendar, the drivers and engineers will have to quickly adapt to one unique feature of this track: the poor grip as a result of sand from the nearby beach. This will particularly handicap the drivers competing in group 1 of qualifying, including Edoardo MORTARA. Felipe MASSA will be in group 3, and should therefore benefit from a surface swept clean by drivers in groups 1 and 2.
Great entertainment is pretty much guaranteed thanks to the long straight stretches on this particularly wide track, which are perfect for overtaking. Attack Mode and Fan Boost will, as always, add the extra excitement that is unique to Formula E racing.
“Of course, we’re coming off the back of three good weekends, but we have to keep our feet on the ground, remain focused and continue to make improvements to our car. There’s no doubt that we are heading in the right direction and making progress at every race but there’s no room for error. The entire team is working extremely hard every day.”
Edoardo MORTARA, VENTURI Formula E Team driver
“This will be my first time in Sanya and just two weeks after the race in Hong Kong, I’m delighted at the thought of encountering the Chinese fans again – they are so full of energy and positivity. We’ve scored important points during the last three races, which highlights our current form. We have to continue along this path, and always keep improving. I hope that we’ll be competitive on this track, which is quite different from the last two. Its two long straight stretches offer an interesting challenge in terms of energy consumption and I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do.”
Felipe MASSA, VENTURI Formula E Team driver
“Hong Kong went very well for us and whilst we definitely took time to celebrate our result, we were back to the business of preparing for Sanya very quickly. We’re a comparatively small, tight team and there’s no room for complacency. We mustn’t forget that we’re only five races down, we still have eight races to go so our focus remains firmly forward and on the immediate and unique challenge that Sanya presents. The car is running well and we will arrive at the track in Sanya fully determined, ready to push hard and do our best.”

A pioneer in the field of electromobility since 2000, Monaco-based VENTURI President, Gildo PASTOR was an early supporter of Alejandro AGAG – FIA Formula E CEO – when he began laying the foundations for what would become the FIA Formula E World Championship. Drawing on his expertise in the field, the Monegasque innovator quickly threw his support behind the fledgling Formula E project and decided to create the VENTURI Formula E Team which has competed in every season since the championship premiered in 2014.
In 2015, VENTURI became an Formula E FIA-approved manufacturer. Today VENTURI supplies full powertrain systems for the VENTURI Formula E and HWA AG teams.
In 2018, Susie WOLFF was appointed Team Principal of VENTURI Formula E Team.
