It was a challenging end to the 11th round of the FIA 2018-2019 Formula E Championship for the Monaco-based VENTURI Formula E Team at the Unesco World Heritage site.

The race had barely begun before it was red flagged following a multiple car collision at turn one of the first lap. After the re-start Swiss-Italian VENTURI driver, Edoardo MORTARA struggled with his rear brakes and was unable to avoid a further collision with BMWi Andretti Motorsport driver, Alexander SIMS, on lap 2 which resulted in his early departure from the race. Brazilian teammate, Felipe MASSA, climbed up the pack from 11th after the restart to ninth and managed to hold his position for the remainder of the race resulting in an additional two championship points for the team.

QUOTES

“What a disappointing day. We had some brake issues throughout the weekend and also in the race and in the end, I had to retire because of that. There was nothing I could do about the collision [with Alexander Sims]. We really have to understand what was going on there. I don’t know if it was the same issue as earlier in the day – we need to investigate this issue now. It’s fair to say that I’m more than a little disappointed and frustrated.”
Edoardo MORTARA, VENTURI Formula E Team driver

“First of all, I’m quite disappointed with what happened after the first corner. I mean… we do the start, we are fighting, we make the first corner, and if you have an accident it’s part of the race. If you avoid the accident – something that is quite difficult at this track – and you see yourself in fourth, but then they put it back to the grid positions, then why are we even doing the start if it doesn’t count for anything? I’m really disappointed with the decision – this is not a decision that is taken in the best interests of the sport. In the end I re-started the race in eleventh and finished ninth – helped in part by another driver’s drive through. This is a very difficult track for overtaking, so it’s hard to gain positions during the race. You could say it’s positive in a way that we scored points – but maybe we could have scored a lot more if what happened at the first corner had been dealt with differently.”
Felipe MASSA, VENTURI Formula E Team driver

“All in all it was a challenging day. We didn’t quite have the pace during the race so Felipe did a good job to get some points. For Edo it was always going to be difficult starting from the back of the grid at this track and he struggled with a brake issue which we need to investigate. Definitely not our best day but we will bounce back and turn our focus now to preparing for New York where we will hopefully finish the season on a more positive note.”
