Monaco-based VENTURI Formula E Team ends the opening round of the ABB FIA Formula E Season 5 in Ad Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, on a high after Swiss test driver, Simona DE SILVESTRO, posted the fastest lap set by a female driver at the twisting 2.5km track.

The UNESCO World Heritage site on the outskirts of the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh, played host to a historic day of testing today with eight female drivers taking to the track in the new Gen2 race cars. DE SILVESTRO posted a fastest lap time of 1:12.048 in the VENTURI VFE-05 with Colombian driver, Tatiana CALDERON, following behind with a best time of 1:12.229 for DS Techeetah.
Having driven the Gen1 car in Season 1, DE SILVESTRO was very keen to see what she could get from the dramatically improved Gen2. Her result was even more impressive considering that she set her time without having the opportunity to access the full 250kW of power.

Following a challenging race day, the VENTURI Formula E Team worked hard to put the lessons learned from qualifying and racing on the previous day into practice. Joining DE SILVESTRO at the track, lead drivers Edoardo MORTARA and Felipe MASSA shared the test day posting fastest lap times of 1:11.005 and 1:11.896 respectively.

“It’s been very special to participate in the test today. The car felt great, we had some typical testing tweaks to make but the speed of the improvements made by the team was really impressive and bodes well for the season ahead. I like the track here, it’s really challenging to drive and I enjoyed seeing what the car could do, it’s left me hungry for more track time. We shouldn’t underestimate the impact that an event like today can have on future female driving talent. Or any motorsport talent for that matter. I really hope that we have inspired young people out there who are may be considering a career in this industry. We’re proof that if you work hard, great things are possible regardless of your gender.”

“The team worked well together today and Simona did exactly what we brought her in to do, the feedback she provided is invaluable. She’s a great competitor and it’s good to end our weekend in Saudi Arabia on a positive note. We have lots of work ahead of round two in Marrakesh but we’re already looking forward to being back out on track in the New Year.”
